Asphalt shingles only
Let's start with the limits. Rejuvenation is made for asphalt shingles. It doesn't work on metal, tile or slate. It doesn't work on flat or low-slope roofs either, like TPO, EPDM, PVC, modified bitumen or built-up tar and gravel.
Plenty of church campuses have both. The sanctuary might have a steep shingle roof while a newer education wing has a flat one. In that case, only the shingle sections can be treated, and the rest goes to the right trade.
This page is for churches and other nonprofits. If you own or run a business building, see office and retail buildings.
Which church buildings can be treated
Good fit when
- The sanctuary or fellowship hall has asphalt shingles
- A parsonage or church-run daycare has a shingle roof
- Another nonprofit building, like an office or food pantry, has shingles
- Shingles are faded or shedding granules but still lie flat
- The decking feels solid underfoot
Not a fit when
- The roof is flat or low-slope
- The roof is metal, tile or slate
- Large areas of shingles are missing
- The decking is soft or rotted
- Water is coming in because the roof has failed
The budget conversation
A replacement is a big ask for a congregation or a nonprofit board. It can mean a capital campaign or years of saving.
A treatment usually costs around 20% of replacement. It's priced by roof square footage, so the cost scales with the roof, not the building's value. Each treatment comes with a 5-year transferable warranty, and we give you the written terms before work starts. It can be repeated about every 5 years, for up to about 15 extra years total.
Get the assessment done before your next budget cycle, so the committee works from real numbers. See how pricing works on the cost page.
Treatment or replacement: a side-by-side for trustees
Finance committees and trustees weigh a roof like any big expense. Here's a plain comparison for a roof that's still a candidate.
| Item | Replacement | Rejuvenation |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | The full price of a new roof | Usually around 20% of replacement |
| On site | Old shingles torn off and hauled away | Sprayed on, with no tear-off and no dumpster |
| Years it buys | Starts over with new shingles | Up to about 5 years per treatment, repeatable for up to about 15 extra years |
| Budget timing | One large cost, all at once | A smaller cost now, with replacement planned for a later year |
| Right call when | The roof has failed or is near the end of its life | Shingles are aging but still sound |
Tell us what your finance committee or trustees need to see, and we'll talk it through at the assessment. Ask your accountant how to book it.
Scheduling around worship and church events
Our hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm, so the work stays clear of Sunday worship.
- 01Assessment on a weekday
The owner walks every building himself, during the week. Book it on the free roof assessment page.
- 02Tune-up, then treatment
Loose shingles, nail pops and flashing get handled before the treatment goes on.
- 03Fast dry times
In mild, dry weather the treatment is tack free in about 30 minutes, ready for foot traffic in about an hour, and fully cured in 1 to 2 hours.
- 04Planned around your calendar
Larger buildings take longer than a house. The schedule comes out of the assessment, so bring the church calendar, with weddings and daycare hours on it.
Safe around people and grounds
Church grounds see a lot of people. There may be a daycare playground, a garden or a memorial area right by the building. Here's what you should know about the product:
- It's made from soybean oil and is biodegradable
- It's pH neutral with little to no odor
- It has no flash point, so it doesn't burn as a liquid
- It carries 96% certified biobased content under USDA BioPreferred
Keep kids, pets and everyone else off the work area until it's dry, about an hour in mild weather. We protect delicate plants near the walls and rinse any overspray off with water.
There's no tear-off, so there's no dumpster in the parking lot and no old shingles headed to the landfill. Read more about the soy-based roof treatment.
Some church roofs are simply worn out. If yours is, we'll say so plainly. Spending money on a treatment that can't help isn't good stewardship.
Common questions
How much does church roof rejuvenation cost compared to replacement?
Rejuvenation usually costs around 20% of what replacing the same roof would. It's priced by roof square footage, so a big sanctuary roof costs more to treat than a parsonage. The replacement side depends on the building's size and pitch, so use a roofer's quote for that number. The instant roof estimate gives you a starting range for treatment.
Can you treat a church roof without disrupting services?
Yes. We work Monday to Saturday, so Sunday stays clear. The treatment goes on in hours, not days. In mild, dry weather it's ready for foot traffic in about an hour. Tell us about midweek services or events and we'll plan the work days with you.
Can you treat the flat roof on our fellowship hall?
No. Rejuvenation is for asphalt shingles only. Flat and low-slope roofs, like TPO, EPDM or built-up, aren't candidates, and neither are metal, tile or slate. If your campus has a mix, we can assess the shingle sections and tell you what qualifies.
Will treatment affect our existing roof warranty?
That depends on the shingle maker's terms. Pull out the warranty paperwork from when the roof went on, or call the manufacturer before treatment. If you can't find it, ask whoever installed the roof. See does roof rejuvenation void my shingle warranty.
